Philosophy & Vision
My vision is to create an alternative, holistic approach to healing by encouraging a combination of evidence-based practice with practice-based natural approaches. As we adapt to the demands of a competitive society, the escalating high cost of living, and increased violence against women and children, our relationships with self and others become vulnerable. We have less time available to cultivate healthy relationships for ourselves and others.
The Soulful approach is different to other practices because it is recognized that traditional talking therapies can lack soulful connections and often require additional modalities to deliver a holistic approach to modern healing.
Specialization in trauma therapy and victims of crime.
Background
Sally is an experienced Clinical Social Worker, Psychotherapist and Counsellor. She has worked with marginalized children and youth for many years and has gained significant understanding and knowledge of childhood trauma viewed through the lens of atypical development and adverse childhood experiences.
Through her private practice, Sally's clients include adults and children who are victims of crime, First Nations people presenting with addictions at The Glen for Women Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre, and individuals seeking help and support for relational issues and mental health. She says most of her clients present with unresolved childhood trauma which is often the cause of the addiction and unhelpful coping style.

Mental health counselling for individuals to include children and adults.

I have always been curious about human behaviour and thought processing. Over time, this has led to a natural curiosity to understand how negative events can develop into trauma, impacting our relationships, worldview and manifestation of future outcomes.
I want to help others to heal from these traumatic events and create a rich future of happiness and optimism.

With clients presenting with trauma issues, I like to use polyvagel theory by Stephen Porges, complimented by Deb Dana's clinical interpretation of the autonomic nervous system. This approach helps clients to recognize their nervous system defines their mental state, reactions and behavior.
Inspired by the work of psychiatrist Carl Jung, I believe there is unlimited potential in the human subconscious through dream analysis and adjusting our belief system to achieve transformation. I love this reminder that our imagination is our gateway to the subconscious:
“The debt we owe to the play of imagination is incalculable.” by Carl Jung
My default 'counselling language' is the Rogerian person-centred approach to help clients feel validated and supported throughout their therapeutic journey. This approach really helps to strengthen the client-therapist relationship to build trust and a lasting professional relationship. -
I am interested in exploring transformation through adversity. I am curious to learn more about human resilience through the power of our belief system. This also connects to the power of the subconscious mind and the untapped human potential.

I like to use elements of schema therapy to help clients identify problematic schemas or beliefs. During the therapeutic process, we discuss and replace them with more viable or adaptive schemas in organizing and understanding new information or situations we encounter in our personal and professional relationships.

Most clients tell me they feel better after just one session. They describe feeling "lighter' and "less burdened" by their thoughts. Many clients learn strategies and skills to manage their anxiety, rumination and low moods and can begin to implement immediately.

Being able to make a difference in a client's life has enabled me to feel fulfilled in my career with a sense of purpose.
-
I enjoy being able to make a difference in my client's lives. I find it rewarding when a client tells me they have hope for the future and are developing the skills to emotionally regulate themselves.
Working in private practice, I am able to devote time and energy to support many clients at a pace that suits my lifestyle and personal commitment. Continued professional development ensures I keep up date with the latest in therapeutic trends and research.

My 'bad hair' days are usually linked with feelings of low energy and tiredness. As a practitioner it is best practice to ensure adequate rest and thorough supervision to prevent burn-out and vicarious trauma. Self-care is important and I try to book regular holidays for rest periods.

Communities and individuals are currently experiencing increased crimes of violence relating to domestic and family violence. There is a marked increase of reported gender violence. These crimes against women and children have reached epidemic proportions with claims of inadequate support and protection from the police, inadequate sentencing laws, and inadequate protection for women and children post offender incarceration.

The Netlix movie entitled 'Dirty John' depicts true crime stories of domestic and interpersonal violence. It deals with themes of abuse, coercive control, manipulation and narcissistic behavior, as well as the behaviors of those being abused. This movie helps to shine the light of domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV) that is a modern pandemic.
