Philosophy & Vision
I am Kerriann, a social worker and counsellor in private practice and with over 20 years experience. I work individuals, couples and family or community groups and across a broad range of modalities. I have seen that healing comes through re-connection to self and others as well as to the world and nature around us. Sometimes we get stuck on our journey and need a hand to remember who we are and what it means to be having a very human experience. I am practical and warm and will always be guided by your goals and what you would like to get out of working with a therapist.
Background
I have over 20 years experience as a counsellor/therapist and social worker. My key areas of expertise are counselling, confidence and self-awareness building, leadership, and advocacy. I have undertaken post graduation training in family therapy (including couples therapy) as well as yoga teacher training and therapy. My approach is informed by my interest in families, relationships, the impact of trauma on the body and mind and neuroscience and the bodies incredible ability to heal itself.
I also offer professional supervision.

A conversation with Kerriann Dear
-
As a younger woman, I wanted to understand how to grow and develop myself and challenge things in the system that didn't seem fair and just, and this, eventually, led to a road of self-enquiry to find my place in the scheme of things and be grateful for the things that I could influence and accept those that were not up for changing. Through my social work degree I encountered family therapy and just loved its structure and thinking of the way family systems (and groups) can operate. This took me into wanting to know more about other therapeutic modalities and then into practice. As a life long learner, I will explore anything that interests me so I have read deeply into the sciences of wellbeing. Yoga is a life long companion to my work.

I was fortunate to have a teacher who took his students through the evolution of psychotherapy and family therapy. Jung work was an early inspiration and the archetypes still inform my work. I love the way that therapy has evolved through different paradigms, from attachment and development to systems to trauma based and somatic therapies and pro-active wellbeing strategies. I embrace them all with a traditional feminist lens.

The whole person, the whole life and our interface nature.

Family and ecological systems is a big influence on my work as is psychodynamic and inner child work.
I enjoy applying a feminist or post modern analysis (where it is beneficial) and yoga has informed my of the inseparable mind body and spirit connection. I use breathwork, mindfulness, heartmath, somatic experiencing and good old problem solving. -
It will depend on what is important to the client and what their goals for therapy are. I think once a trusting connection is made the real work can commence.
-
Lots of reflective practice and a little help from my own therapists and supervisors as well as yoga training has led me to respond rather than react to my life circumstances. But it is always a work in progress.
-
I love connecting with people about what matters to them.
