Philosophy & Vision
I am a warm and empathetic practitioner and I provide counselling for a variety of issues connected with life transitions and relationships. This includes issues like anxiety, boundaries, parenting, infertility, social pressures (including pressure to have children) and career change/return to work. I am inclusive and neurodiversity affirming, and I use a variety of approaches depending on what works best for you. These include solution-focused therapy (working together to find workable solutions to issues), interpersonal therapy (exploring the relationships in your life), psychoeducation (equipping you with mental information and coping mechanisms) and narrative therapy (examining your personal 'story').
Background
I'm an experienced counsellor who has supported clients across the lifespan private practice and in the community. I have extensive experience supporting individuals with complex needs, including people who have experienced trauma and who have (or care for someone with) a disability and/or developmental delay.
I've also worked as a Behaviour Consultant providing positive behaviour support for families under the NDIS, and I am able to offer parenting strategies as part of my counselling service.
Services
I offer online counselling for adolescents and adults. Sessions are in-person (in Petersham NSW) or via Zoom. I specialise in supporting individuals with issues connected to relationships and life transitions. A Medicare rebate is available for sessions (session cost is $160/hr).
Quality Provision
If you click 'book online' via my website you can either book in an initial 15 minute introductory phone call or you can go straight ahead and book in a session. Regardless of which option you choose, it's very important that you feel I'm a good fit for you, because a positive therapeutic relationship is key to effective counselling. Being able to say "this doesn't work for me" is essential if an approach isn't resonating with you (this includes my approach!).

Therapy Approach
My approach is client-lead, meaning that I aim to create a space that is warm, empathetic and non-judgmental. My practice is inclusive and neurodiversity affirming. I use a variety of approaches, depending on your needs, including solution-focused therapy, interpersonal therapy, strengths-based therapy, psychoeducation and narrative therapy. If you feel comfortable with it, we can also engage in some more creative methods (yes, this is possible via Zoom!).
I'm very flexible with the format of online counselling sessions and I will be guided by you in terms of whether you prefer camera on/off or using the chat function (or a mixture of both). The idea is for you to feel as comfortable as possible during your session.

A conversation with Karen Rose

I have a background in community work that allowed me the immense privilege of being with people during vulnerable moments of their lives. This lead me to choose a social work degree, which then lead to my specialising in mental health. Now I can be "with" in a different, and more profound, way.
-
I have been greatly influenced by the strengths perspective which is core to social work practice - looking at how to utilise the unique strengths of individuals (this includes both inner strengths and outer resources such as relationships).
-
I am greatly interested in women's health issues, particularly the transition to parenthood, and life transitions attached to this (including expectations around having children, having more children, the decision not to have children, and infertility).
I am interested in the stories we tell ourselves about our own life journey; our personal narrative and how we construct it. -
I use a variety of therapeutic approaches depending on the needs of my clients. These include: solution-focused therapy, strengths-based therapy, psychoeducation, expressive arts and narrative therapy.
-
This is an important question for me to ask the client - what does 'better' look like for you?
-
Therapy has allowed me to access a space to process events in my own life, that would otherwise not have been available to me. It has allowed me to process, and to reflect.
-
I think it is an immense privilege to be able to be 'with' people as they share vulnerable parts of themselves, and to help them to process through these issues. I can truly say I love my work.
-
I am having one right now.
-
Goodness, I wasn't expecting this question. There are so many that no response I could give in this teeny text box could possibly do these issues justice.

Good Inside, by Dr Becky Kennedy. A must-read, and pretty much sums up my approach when working with children and parents. Kids are good :)
