I'm Starting To Get Worried That I Might Have Symptoms Of Schizophrenia.
Question: I'm starting to get worried that I might have symptoms of schizophrenia. I don't want my family or friends to know but I probably should talk to someone. The question is who? I don't have much money to spare. Thanking you. Kevin
Answer (1) Kevin, you don't say why you think you might be developing schizophrenia. You speak only of a "fear" that you might be. You do not have to live with this anxiety. Someone from your local community health centre or hospital casualty department can confirm or negate your suspicions or at least refer you to someone who can. Schizophrenia can be modified and treated to some extent nowadays and is no longer the hopeless diagnosis it once was. If you like, send me an e-mail or phone me to outline your signs and symptoms and perhaps we can discuss the possibilities.

Answer (2) Schizophrenia is not a simple illness to diagnose, but if you have unsettling symptoms that may indicate schizophrenia, I agree that it would be wise in your situation to seek help from your local Mental Health Centre. You may also find the website of your local Schizophrenia Fellowship helpful. I have seen personally that patients with symptoms of schizophrenia can improve greatly with a combination of the newer medications and expert psychotherapy. Please do not allow fear to stop you from seeking help. A diagnosis may come as a relief, as then you will be on your way to taking a positive step towards recovery. And, if you are offered medication, persist in giving your doctor feedback until you reach a combination and dose that minimises your symptoms and also the inevitable side effects. I wish you well.
