Confidentiality

Question: Is it ever permissable for a therapist to break confidentiality?

Answer: In Australia as I understand it, we are bound by law to report to relevant agencies if someone tells us (and we believe) they are going to seriously harm themselves or another, eg suicide, assault, child abuse etc. Also, in the course of professional supervision a therapist may reveal information about a client in order to get guidance in their work, though names are usually withheld. And supervisors are themselves bound by confidentiality.
