A conversation with Debra Sumner
-
As a people's person I love to interact with a broad range of individuals from multi cultured and diverse backgrounds, I found people asking me how did I achieve the things I had done. This included being a Triathlete, a Laboratory Technician, a Business Management Consultant and a mother. This made me ask the question of how do I give people support and advice if I have no training in this area, so I set off to undertake mature age studies and found my love of helping people inspired me me to gain a degree in Counselling develop my new mantra of "Believe and Achieve".
-
Being Mindful and 'Believe and Achieve' which includes never giving up on learning.
-
Health has always been important to me as I find achieving a balance of exercise, good food, friends and fresh air is underrated.
However it is very hard to find the right balance and in this fast pace world we need to constantly remind ourselves of the importance of a healthy life. -
The methods I use are all proven therapies gained in my study followed by my ongoing studies of more recent methods such as:
Mindfulness
Narrative Therapy
Solution Focused Therapy
Acceptance Commitment Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
-
Clients will feel progress is being made when they see the change in themselves
-
Therapy has made me a better person because it has shown me that we all at some point need help. I believe that when we are ready to reach out and ask for help there is always someone who is skilled enough to listen to the unique story, provide compassion and offer techniques that can be life changing. Watching clients achieve their goals is such a rewarding job.
-
Watching clients achieve their goals

Yes we all have 'bad hair' days, but accepting my bad hair day and looking forward to the great days makes me appreciate the bad ones. If we do not have bad days how will we know when we have a good day.
-
Communication.
Communication is the number one issue for many clients I have worked with followed by trust, trust in self and trust in others. -
Brene Brown, I love all of her books and my most recent book that was not work related was
The Girl Who Fell from the Sky, the true story of a very inspirational woman.
